New Cosplans!

Every year for conventions I need to come up with new cosplay ideas. This year I want to go for more cutesy costumes that my traditional costumes. I have been watching a lot of animes (Other then the new ones on crunchyroll) to look for new ideas. Here they are right now!

So this podcast is interesting for me. I do have a background in biochemistry so that makes this podcast right up my alley. The host brings on 4 different scientist and they talk about different sciences articles that were in the news that week. They break down the articles, discuss the science behind them and debate about whether or not the science is sound. The episodes are not as focused as I would like them to be, however it does take me back to my university days when my friends and I had these type of conversations. This podcast is definitely not for everyone but I would suggest it for people who enjoy scientific debates between colleges.

I will say that I was very skeptical about this podcast, I don’t find that I am a person in much need for self-help, but maybe everyone who really needs it thinks this way. I listened to this podcast and it shed light on a few aspects of my own life. I will not say it changed my life, but it peaked my interest. This is a very good pod cast, the episodes are short but are uploaded regularly. They’re focused and well organized. The host is a personal trainer, and he invites on other trainers. They discuss the topics about working out as well as mental and emotional healthy. Now this isn’t some quack telling you to use such and such product, it really is just a guy basically telling you to let go of the negativity, surround yourself with positive people, eat healthy and work out. This is a podcast I will continue listening to.

I must say that this is not a very good podcast. I’m not saying that the information of the show is bad, it’s just the wrong medium. It is obviously audio taken from a video. It references seeing things, and work sheets that you need to buy. I had really high hopes for the podcast but sadly it was poorly produced. I don’t have anything else to say about it.

I like this podcast, it is focused on the crime world as it explains in it’s summary. It makes the history fun to listen to. The host has the perfect voice for this type of podcast. Each episode explains a very interesting history in the Noir tone, making it an enjoyable learning conduit. However, the fact that they advertise their website 3 times in 30 mintues drives me up to wall. It takes you out of the story that they’re telling and tries to sell you something; whether it be their book or to get you to visit their website. Other then that gripe, I like this podcast quite a lot.

KONOSUBA -God’s blessing on this wonderful world!

This anime is sold as an adventure, fantasy where a young man dies and is transported to another world by a goddess right after death. From the anime artwork, this anime looks to be a harem anime.

After watching it, it draws from the video game anime sub-genre. The parallel universe seems to be a RPG video game. The first episode is pretty generic with the only plot being to defeat a monster, and there wasn’t much character building.

There isn’t much more to say about this anime at this point hopefully more episodes there will be a glimmer of character development.

Mahou Shoujo Nante Mouiidesukara

Mahou Shoujo Nante Mouiidesukara

I have two words for the summary of this anime Magical Girl. This does seem to be a magical girl anime. Her outfit, according to the summary, is a bathing suit. The art style appears to be very shojou, and it seems to be aimed towards girls. There are few magical girl animes that I like but I’m will to try this.

This anime is a short anime, with the episodes only running for 4 minutes at a time. It thankfully gives an explanation as to why the parents aren’t around, her father works 21 hrs a day every day apparently. I can’t really say anything good or bad about the anime. It is a standard magical girl anime. you have the magical girl costume, with the magical creature that leads the girl through learning about her powers.

Since the episodes are short, only watching two really doesn’t give you much insight into the anime.

Myriad Colors Phantom World

The summary doesn’t tell you much about this anime. It seems to be an action anime with three girls being the leads, and there being some type of enemies called phantoms. Yeah the summary is vague, but I’m assuming it’s going to something similar to a military anime.

After watching the show the it’s an action fantasy fan-service anime. It follows the under dogs of the academy. Every one who attends the academy has special abilities that allow them to fight the phantoms. All the characters are high schoolers, so they go to school as per normal as well as defeat phantoms.

The art style and the theme song of the beginning are very interesting. The character design is very similar to a lot of action animes. Though the phantom designs are awesome and very unique. I do like the anime’s concept but it might not be the anime for me.

Nurse Witch Komugi R.jpg

Nurse Witch Komugi R

Similar to the an earlier anime on this list, this is another magical girl anime, but it’s mixed with an slice of life idol anime. The costumes are more frilly on the art work, which makes it appear to be another shojou anime.

So the three girls that gets given powers are all idols, though as of the first anime there is only one. The enemy is very silly in the first episode. I would best describe this anime’s comedy style as slap stick. The costumes are very cute however, and they depict the character’s personalities very well.

The art style flows between 3d and 2d, which for an oldie like me is still weird. The dance scenes as well as the fight scenes are in 3d and the rest are in 2d. The colours are very bright and follow the style of other magical girl animes. I will not be continuing to watch this anime it’s really not my style.

Ojisan and Marshmallow

So this anime is very much as slice of life romance comedy anime, the main character loves marshmallows and a woman who’s in this office loves him. The anime’s episodes are very short, only three and a half minutes long, but they are very funny.

The art style reminds me of the anime I can’t understand what my husband is saying. I quite like how the anime is fast paced but at the same time only circles around the two main characters interactions. I will definitely be watching this anime again

2016 Goals for Myself

Standard

Source: Unsplash / Photo by Kasuend

Over the last 2  years I have felt like my life has been in a rut. I work at a job I dislike, I am single, and this past September I have lost my father to cancer after his 18 month battle. Since I am not happy with where I am in my life I have decided to make some changes. Sadly I can’t change my job so easily because I do have to make end meet, but I have decided to make 2016 the year of my self-improvement. This blog I feel is going to help me with that.

They say writing things down holds you accountable, but only if you don’t loose the paper. So instead of writing something down on a piece of paper that can be lost I will write in on the internet. I know that almost no one will see this or care but I will write these little goals down for my self.

Goals :

  1. Go the gym with regularity. (I’m not saying 7 days a week… but 6 would be nice.)
  2. Say goodbye to fast foods…. at least 6 days a week.
  3. Learn a new piece of music a month. (this month I learned I Started a Joke)
  4. Write something everyday. (whether it be a few chapters of fanfiction or a blog post)
  5. Take myself out to the movies once a month. (my next movie is deed pool)
  6. Push myself further in my cosplay.
  7. Read more. (At least 30 books)
  8. Experience new things. (new books, new podcasts, new events)

These aren’t resolutions, but goals that I want to place on myself. I want to find my happy and my life again. I want to better myself because I do not feel like if I met Mr. Right with in the next few days that I would be in a good place to be with them. If I were to become pregnant, I don’t think I would be in the right mindset to be a mother. Also, I don’t think that my brain is in the right emotional state to get me that job that I really want to get in my future. I want to build my life up one step at a time. So I’m going to start pushing myself to get better and do more things with my time so that I can move forward in my life.

I have only recently started getting into podcasts, and I must say it’s hard to find good ones. I have tried to find lists of interesting podcasts but they always give me the same ones, the big ones. I wish some one could have come  up with a list of the smaller, unheard of podcasts. So I have decided to start going through the podcast lists on itunes and sound cloud and see what I can find. And because I want to keep a record of the ones that I have listen to and whether I liked them I will be making a quick note of the ones I’ve listened to here. I’m going to try an listen to one podcast from 4 different categories each week, whether I would normally listen to them or not.

Though Matthew Santoro is a well known Canadian YouTube and SnapChat personality and he recently started a podcast. He states in the first episode that he was excited to start a new project after so long, and he is right to be so. The first episode was just really him talking about his life, where he’s been and where he’s going. It got me excited to see what he does over the next year. I listened to a total of 3 episodes and it is really does seem to be a look into his life in audio form. He has his friends on and you listen to their conversations. There isn’t a set topic per episode but since it’s just started it may change in the future. If you’re into a free form podcast then this may be a good show for you. Also, if you are a fan of his you will quite enjoy it. As a fan, I find it very interesting but it’s not for everyone.

I am already a book worm, so picking up this podcast was a no-brainer. Though this is a newer podcasts, the host is not new to the game. The episode format is interviews with writers. It’s very focused but flows very well. They discuss the author’s work and the author’s recommendations. It is very interesting and it introduces the listeners to new artists and books that they wouldn’t have necessarily picked up on their own.

Now I don’t tend to listen to Business shows, or read magazines or articles, but as part of me experiencing new things I decided to listen to something that might help me in the future. I have always thought about going into business for myself so why not listen. The first episode is just an introduction about what the series will be and the back ground of the host. Though I feel like it could have been done in a more timely manner I do also understand that there will be some growing pains with most smaller podcasts. So I only managed to get through 3 episodes of this podcast. It is a good podcast, but it is a very loose show. There is 15 episodes so maybe it gets better, but I find that the show is not focused enough as is should be at the beginning. The 2nd episode, though it was interesting, she interviewed Kim Katrin Milan and I felt like the conversation went all over the place, which I don’t feel like it did justice for this show. I hope that over the series the growing pains have gotten better. I will try to get through the rest of the episodes but I may not make it. Overall this podcast is a brilliant idea and the host is fantastic, I just hope that the episodes get a bit more focused in the future.

I don’t feel like this podcast should be found in comedy. It really just is a talk so where the host and his guests really talk about anything an everything. There is no episode structure, it is just them talking about things. Similar to Matthew Santoro’s Podcast, you need to be a fan or just enjoy listening to peoples conversation to enjoy this podcast. Sadly I did not enjoy the host’s voice nor do I find the conversations interesting or new. This will not be a pod cast that I will come back to.

Crunchyroll Winter 2016 Lineup Part 1

Standard

As a cosplayer I watch a lot of anime and cartoons, but I’ve found that as I get older I’m having difficulty finding new animes that I really enjoy. Since I have this week off for my birthday I thought that I should watch at least the first few episodes of all the new series on CrunchyRoll.

I find that I rely too much on the anime’s summary, that doesn’t always do the anime justice. I will be throwing out a lot of terms but don’t worry I’ll make a post about them at a later date, or google is a thing.

It is going to be very long to go through all of the animes in one shot, being that 44 anime series are in the current season on CrunchyRoll. So I am going to put down some ground rules before I start watching them. I will only be watching animes on their first season, which leaves only 17. I will write a brief note about the summary and one for the few episodes that I watched. I will be also spreading these recaps over a few of week as to not make the posts too long, I’ll be aiming for 4-5 animes per post. So Let’s begin!

Source: CrunchyRoll

Active Raid

This anime is being sold as an action, mech, police, sci-fi anime. Just from the synopsis I couldn’t judge if it suppose to be a shonen or a seinen anime so with the summary we can assume it’s going to be pg-13.

After after watching the first 2 episodes I can say it seems to be a typical mech anime. Though this one includes a self important female character who has yet to figure out that justice is not black and white, nor does it come from the manual. The anime series does seem to have a main enemy though as of the second episode the characters doesn’t seem to know about them as of yet.

The anime style is very clean and fluid. The character are well designed and makes me want to file the mechs away as a cosplay idea. It falls under the category seinen or mildly fan service-y. I’m not sure if I’ll continue to watch it after watching the first 2 episodes that were available at the current time but it is a fun anime with quirky characters, good action scenes and ok writing. If you like mechanical exoskeletons fighting each other, then this is the show for you. You’ll just need to get over your hatred for Kazari Asami.

Aokana : Four Rythm Across the Blue

Ok, so this seems to be another sci-fi anime with parts of sports and slice of life thrown in. Sadly the summary is very vague, and normally I wouldn’t click on this anime, but basically everyone can fly thanks to a new invention and there is some sort of tournament. Like I said, the synopsis is lacking but lets look at the actual anime.

After watching the one episode I have available to me it seems to be a pretty standard slice of  life. There is a new transfer student, this time around is a female who is a little flaky and obsessed with flying, and the story begins. The classmates that are shown have very distinct personalities and we’re introduced to a new type of sport which the main character has an innate skill for. I can only expect that this first episode was a build up towards the rest of the anime, but sadly this anime has not gripped my interest.

The anime style is very shojo, and all the character are very cute and the colours are very bright. The high speed visuals are very good and I do like the sport wear. I couldn’t tell if there were some 3d scenes with how short the sport section of this episode was, but that animation style might add in at parts of this anime. Sadly this anime is not for me.

Source: CrunchyRoll

BBKBRNK

The name of this anime gives nothing away, similar to the summary. My best guess to what this anime type is shonen, action and maybe either sci-fi or fantasy. It’s hard to tell from the summary. It seems like it’s based in the real world but the term ‘living weapon’ is throwing me through a loop. I’m not sure what this anime wants to marketed as.

After watching the anime it reminds me a lot of Vision of Escaflowne. People control mechs but instead of one person controlling one mech, it takes 5 people. Also similar to Escaflowne (the mech) the mechs are alive. The anime is fast pace and similar to Active Raid, has a lot of good battle scenes. Each character has very distinct personality that some times clashes but over all it is a good anime.

I like how this anime seamlessly switches between 3d and 2d animation. The characters, as well as the animation style, reminds me a lot of Akame ga Kill minus the horror aspect. All in all, I’m not sure that I’ll continue watching this anime but there is a good chance, if solely for the weapon designs.

Source: CrunchyRoll

Erased

This one is  different from the last 3, this anime is definitely a fantasy, slice of life anime. The summary explains that the main character is a manga ka who lives with this ability that he calls revival. Revival is an ability that transports him back in time a few minutes to stop bad this from happening. That, however, is all that’s written.

After watching the first 2 episodes I can say that I really like this anime. It is different and interesting. The characters are still a little flat but I am intrigued by the story. It turns out that the revival doesn’t just take him back a few minutes it takes him back to the point in time where the threat no longer exists, whether it be a few minutes or 18 years. The plot is dark, but it makes it interesting. This anime is something that I will watch till the end and encourage anyone who likes dark anime to do so as well.

Shadowhunters Mortal Instrument Review

Standard
shadowhunters-the-mortal-instruments-laeuft-ab-heute-auf-netflix

There has only been one other re-imagining of this book series, and I must say that the movie was pretty bad. The casting choices for the movie were not the best and the writing could have been better. That being said, it made me very skeptical when I saw that Netflix has just launched they’re own show based on the book series.  Currently only one episode is available to stream with the next available on Jan 20, and I will be watching it. Netflix has a good reputation with their original series. Not all of them have been great but over all they’re quite good.

I am very happy with how the first episode has turned out so far. The book series is one of the better series that I have gotten my hands on in the recent past. The characters are likable, there is not a clear line between good and evil, and magic is really. It sounds like the perfect combination of everything fantastic in the world of literature.

I don’t want to give a definitive decision on whether or not I like the series until a few more episodes in, but I can say it has potential. I will try and give an honest review with out divulging any spoilers.

The choice of actors, based on appearance, is quite good. They line up well with the books, obviously not perfectly but I can forgive Isaiah Mustafa for being Luke. So far the acting isn’t horrible, but I don’t like judging on the first 30 minutes of anything, we haven’t really gotten to see much of any one character as of yet.  The story is currently following the novels better than the movie currently.

So far, the series has good potential. I will continue to watch the series to see if it does justice to my favorite series.
