I will say that this book was supposed to be geared towards the layman, and I feel like they failed a little. This book is a very scientific book that is geared towards deepening your understanding about dieting and losing weight. Fung really focuses on studies and science to back up his points. He does go into a lot more details than most books like this I’ve read. Given the fact that his specialty is diabetes, he does go back to it regularly, however, given the increase of insulin insensitivity in North America it makes sense.

Given my biochemistry background, this book really interested me. He does break down the popular diets and how your body reacts to them. He starts the book by giving you the criteria for the studies that he looks at. These studies and the criteria made sure that he was only looking at scientifically sound studies. One of the criteria was that the study had to have been published in a peer-reviewed journal, this helps because the results are re-tested and checked.

The suggesting of how to fix your diet comes only at the end of the book, and I won’t ruin it, but it’s not something that would be easy or lacked by most people. I did actually buy the book because I was more interested in the science behind intermitted fasting and wants to find out more about it. A lot of blog and youtube videos only give you an uneducated look into it, which is not a source that I would turn to. This book did summarize a lot of studies that would have taken me forever to find and read.

I really enjoyed this book and the way it was written. If you are looking for some more information and science behind why dieting doesn’t work this book is for you.
