There has always been something a little off about Rachel, and she’s known it since she was a little kid. However, with her mother in the psych ward, she thought that she had merely inherited a mental disorder. However, on her 18 birthday, she meets a man that will change her life. She doesn’t realize how deeply her life will be impacted until it’s too late.

This book was not what I expected by reading the synopsis. It sounded like an epic adventure. However, it ended up being more of a coming of age book. There was a little more action in the last 1/4 of the book. Though I say, it’s a coming of age story… but like in a superhero origin store kind of way. This book is a really long build-up to her coming into her destiny.

The character of Rachel has a lot of potential, however, I didn’t really feel connected to the characters. Though she was placed into the situation through birth, she never really paid any attention to it. I find that a little hard to believe. The characters throughout this book were a bit hard to like, and I felt like there needed to be a little more character development for the rest of the characters.

I will say there was one huge pet peeve in this book. The author spells out the phonetics of the Scottish accent. That makes it really hard for the reader to read. I like reading my books quickly understand the dialogue the first time that I read it. This spelling does not lend well to understanding the text quickly.

It is a really slow book, so don’t go in expecting a lot of action.

I received a review copy from Hidden Gem.

A Girl and Three Sweethearts

Though sold as a reverse harem, there really is only ever 2 love interests at any given time. We have Sakurai Misaki (Kiritani Mirei) as a pastry chef who has been recently let go from her job. She happens to meet up with Shibasaki Chiaki (Miura Shohei) who offers her a job. She quickly accepts and moves in with him and his 2 younger brothers. Though she has her sights on him, romance might blossom with another brother.

Within the first episode, you quickly realise that thought Chiaki is set up as the 1st male lead, that title actually goes to Shibasaki Kanata (Yamazaki Kento) the middle brother. I love the chemistry between Kiritani Mirei and Yamazaki Kento but I may be a bit bias. They try to add in the youngest brother, Shibasaki Toma (Nomura Shuhei) as a 3rd love interest but that is not the case. This is a fun light-hearted drama, where Yamazaki gets to play the asshole like most male leads. Seeing him in a kitchen though might have given me a few fantasies about men though. Pick it up because it’s a good watch.

Mahou Shoujo Nante Mou ii desu kara

Before:

I have two words for the summary of this anime Magical Girl. This does seem to be a magical girl anime. Her outfit, according to the summary, is a bathing suit. The art style appears to be very shoujo, and it seems to be aimed towards girls. There are few magical girl animes that I like but I’m will to try this.

This anime is a short anime, with the episodes only running for 4 minutes at a time. It thankfully gives an explanation as to why the parents aren’t around, her father works 21 hrs a day every day apparently. I can’t really say anything good or bad about the anime. It is a standard magical girl anime. you have the magical girl costume, with the magical creature that leads the girl through learning about her powers.

Since the episodes are short, only watching two really doesn’t give you much insight into the anime.

Now:

This anime is based off of a manga series by the same name. I couldn’t find any information about the anime series, however the anime series does have 12 episodes, each with a run time of 4 minutes.

The best way I can describe this anime is as a very boring slice-of-life anime surrounding a magical girl with no enemies to fight. The main character, Yuzuka Hanami, saves Milton, the magical companion, from death by starvation. As thanks he turns her into a magical girl, only thing is that she doesn’t want to be a magical girl, she just wants to be a regular girl. Oh yeah and she hates her magical girl outfit, which is a bikini.

This anime has no plot and no goal. So unless you really like magical girl animes I would suggest to steer clear of this anime.
